too many email notifications

Recently, even before update 1.9.9, I have been receiving multiple copies of every notification (e.g., user login). Usually, I receive the same email seven times at once. For other notifications, sometimes only three copies. When I send a test email, it works fine. What could be causing this? I haven’t made any changes.
