Touch support for mobile devices

I have been trying to figure out a way to enable touch events for this plugin; i.e. on a mobile device, touching the parent menu the first time should expand the menu to reveal the children, while a second tap would actually take you to the corresponding page. There seems to be a hack that should in theory allow this; see here: http://touchpunch.furf.com/

I am not sure, however, how to implement this. Adding the scripts to the header is easy enough, but I believe some modifications to the plugin itself might be required. Does anyone know how to go about implementing this?
