Trackback spam

    I downloaded and installed WordPress yesterday. Immediately after posting my first test post I received the following email:

    New trackback on your post # “Hello world!”

    Website: magazine subscription (IP: 203.197.169.19 , tataelxsi.co.in)
    URI : http://www.crapmagazines4cheap.com
    Excerpt:
    <trackback />magazine subscription
    love this site! check out my magazine subscriptions

    Then after every test post I submitted I received something similar about a trackback for a magazine subscription.

    I’m used to MT and have had no spamming problems with its use and I’m finding this trackback irritating. If this is part of the deal with WP then I think I would rather uninstall it again.

    Could someone please explain to me what is going on and if this is normal?

    Basically, as soon as that post appears, you’ve pinged PingOMatic, which pings several update services (subscription services which announce new posts, an alternative to RSS). This, of course, alerts spammers to your blog’s presence and activity. And, WP has been under heavy trackback spam attack lately. Your best bet would be to add “magazine” to your blacklist or try another anti-spam solution: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/spam/

    Thank you for your help. I just couldn’t understand how a brand new blog could receive instant spam. I’ve had numerous blogs, blogger, greymatter, and MT and have never been hit by this much spam so soon. I haven’t even been using WordPress for 24 hours yet!! I’ll look into turning off the pinging. I’m still finding my way around and just testing things out at this stage so your help is much appreciated.

    It’s the pinging. Turn it all off. If your other blog installations had used it, they’d be getting hit that quickly too.
