• I should start by saying that I am newby to WordPress and fairly inexperienced with HTML. I hope I have used the right forum.
The village has a web site which has grown over the years and much of the code is now obsolete. Also it is not reactive. In short it needs to be totally re-written and I propose to do this in a fairly basic WordPress manner. Looking to the future, at present I am the only person who supports it and at 80 I need to consider its future!
I can do this in two ways – re-create the web site on a local server and then upload to my current domain, or I can create it on on-line in a development domain.
My concern is regarding the process of moving the whole thing from either the development domain or the local server to the current domain.
I know there are facilities to do this but the little experience I have had is that they don’t always work well. And with a site that runs to several hundred pages it could end up with a lot of bugs.
What is the best option? Use a local server or an on-line development domain. If the latter, is it possible for my ISP to simply rename the development site to the active site. I suspect that would totally mess up internal links!
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Hello, begadoc

You can do it both way, create the whole website in a local server and upload it into the webserver when it’s done. There are plenty of WordPress plugins to help you migrate your website from local server to webserver. like Duplicator – WordPress Migration PluginDuplicator All-in-One WP Migration etc

There are lot’s of webserver support WordPress staging/development site also. You can change your development domain name very easily when you are satisfied with your development site.

Thanks, hope it’s helpful for you.

You probably should do a backup of all the old sites content from whatever facilities you have to do so.

Now, hang a subdirectory on your present server. I’d just name it WP or WordPress. Install WordPress there. Do yourself a big favor and install and configure an automated backup plugin when you are done with the install. You’ll want to save the backups off to your local PC or some other storage means but the backup is important!

    I almost always use https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/updraftplus/

Now build your WordPress based website in that sub-domain. You can even use links from the old site to cut back on some of your initial work but you can’t link to the home page because the next step will effectively kill your home page once you are ready to publish the WordPress website.

Once you are ready, read through the following article a couple times and do as it says to make your WordPress take over as your website.

    https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/giving-wordpress-its-own-directory/

You may have to rename your old index file if the old site still answers once you are done the above steps but usually the WordPress index will neatly take over once you finish the above.

Once you are done with this part of the task do another good backup and save to local storage. Then you can pretty much trust the backup plugin to handle the rest.
