Trigger Used for Commission Calculation

I’m trying to understand how the plugin calculates the commission to make sure that I can use it for my affiliate program.
I assume the plugin calculates commissions when the referred user/customer makes a payment to purchase a product/an item.
In my case, my website is for freelance jobs. Employers make project payments X to freelancers when jobs are completed. The site deducts a platform fee Y from this project payment X made to freelancers. Affiliates will be paid commission Z, a percentage of platform fee Y.
Will the plugin be able to differentiate between payments X and Y? Will it calculate affiliate commissions Z based on the platform fee Y or do I need to set the affiliate commission directly as a percentage of project payment X?
