I’m new at local hosting and am confused with the error I’m getting while trying to log in via localhost:8888/wordpress. The error I’m getting is “Error establishing a database connection”. I’ve researched many solutions with no luck, including this thread. I’ve edited the wp-config-sample.php file dozens of times trying different things with no avail.

I was told today there’s something called WAMP which is for windows but on the MAMP website it says this works for windows too? I know the first M stands for mac. The only WAMP downloads I could find looked sketchy.

It seems like a longshot getting someone to help me with the information I’ve given, if you need more information let me know.

I’ve been stuck on this the past couple days, I would be eternally in debt to the person who has a solution for me.

  • Hello,

you can find WAMP here WAMP. Also, wp-config-sample.php file is not readable by WordPress at all, if you want to include some wp configs, you must use only wp-config.php

Second thing you must have is properly created MySQL database with admin user (it’s probably username “root” and without password).

Try something of this, so we can discuss more.

Hey Ristapk, sorry for the late reply been a busy couple days.

I’ve downloaded WAMP and am now having trouble with the first step; opening phpMyAdmin. I click on the link to open it and all I see is a blank screen.

I noticed while installing it that my computer doesn’t have a C drive, I’m installing it under my J drive. I’m not sure what the letters mean, but could this be a problem?

Note: I couldn’t use port 80 in MAMP because it told me something else was using it. I changed the port in MAMP and it worked fine. Do I need to do this in WAMP? If so could someone direct me as to how to go about it?

Never mind managed to change it to port 81 but the original problem persists.

    Hi,
Were you able to open phpMyAdmin and create a database?

Guys guess what. After 4 days of messing around I’ve fixed it. 10/10 happiness. It was a combination of things.

Installing WAMP in the wrong place.
    Properly redirecting its port.
incorrectly typing the url (had to put my modified port after local host, so localhost:8080)

Thanks for the replies anyhow 🙂
