• I’m running this site on BlueHost. For the past few weeks, the site experiences sporadic performance issues, such as loading a page in two minutes (normally it takes a few seconds). No major changes have taken place. This morning, BlueHost has identified that the site is impacting the performance on the entire server and disabled it. BlueHost claims that no other sites on the server are experiencing degradation, so it must be something with my site. BlueHost has its own denial of service protection, I also run WPBruiser.

When the performance degrades, I’m seeing “Waiting for prologika.com…” in the browser status bar. I did a Chrome Network Test, and it shows that nothing is happening during this time. The js, CSS, and image files are loaded only within the last few seconds.

What could be causing this and what’s the troubleshooting path. The site debug info is below:

  • Time to get brutal… That site wouldn’t even run for me long enough to check a few details and let Sucuri work its magic.

I’d be disabling every plugin I could disable and removing every disabled plugin I couldn’t make a case for keeping… That case would need to be something like, ‘I ran it just last week and I will need it in >three weeks’.

I don’t know a thing about WPBruiser but I’d disable it. If you want DDOS protection then go with Cloudflare but you need to fix that server problem first. I don’t think that thing can do a bit against anything continuously hitting against the front door there. Fix your problem and let Cloudflare’s servers worry about the DDOS attacks.

You have what appears to be a successful business there with a decent website. You need a better host than shared hosting. Ask Bluehost to help you migrate to a VPS if you can’t find the issue.

I’ve seen degradations happen for innocent sites sometimes due to ‘luck of the draw’ on a shared host. When everybody is busy the last guy through the door has to wait his turn. Maybe that’s you.

You also need to be running a cache plugin. Cache enabler is the minimum and that just to have something orchestrating what happens on the BlueHost Nginx proxy that’s probably sitting out front of your website.

iThemes Security plugin, WordFence, and run the Sucuri Scanner plugin over that site several times then disable it. You can keep it installed though.

You get a handle on the problems then Cloudflare!!!!

Thank you for the great tips! Caching helped a lot. As far as identifying the root cause, I’m still at square zero. If a plugin is the problem, wouldn’t the server memory or CPU utilization be high? I monitor memory and CPU of the server in real time and it’s consistently low. I might be just the last guy in the door. Not sure how I got deprioritized and no help from BlueHost either.
