Check in the upper right corner when creating posts or pages for screen options.
Click Screen Options on any post or page edit screen and tick “Discussion”.

Ah, thanks. I had clicked “comments” instead of “discussion”. esmi, do you have a life? I swear you’ve answered half the questions I’ve posted for several years running now! lol

ehm, sorry… if we click “discussion” we disable the comments…. what happens if we tick “comments”?
No. Ticking Discussion in Screen Options simply reveals the Discussion tab on the Post and Page editing screens. Unticking “Allow comments” in that pane disables commenting.
