tweaking sticky?

Is there a way to tweak the sticky option?

What I would like to do:
Have the main blog area where posts roll out like normal, in one of the columns/sidebar be able to stick one post, whichever post I would like.
Is there already a solution for this or is a tweak in order.

I have a work around in mind, but I thought I would check if there is a solution. I have searched a bit through the forums and plugins but the amount of stuff is daunting.
