We tried this service, but it doesn’t seem to be returning Tweet counts. Had you tested any url with this and was it working? We will consider this in upcoming releases.
I have not tested it on my website yet. All I have done is checking out if it works by loading two URLs, the ww.wp.xz.cn and the opensharecount.com.
These is the data that it shows:
* http://opensharecount.com/count.json?url=https://ww.wp.xz.cn/
* http://opensharecount.com/count.json?url=http://opensharecount.com/
You can see that the ww.wp.xz.cn URL has a share count of 0, because the website needs to be authorized on OpenShareCount first. Share count for their URL is working, therefore I presume that it should work for any other authorized website.

Try adding this counter as an option in the plugin, with a note to authorize a website in order for it to work.

Could I also offer newsharecounts.com as an option?
It works in a similar way, requiring you to authorize with Twitter and add your website.
However, there are quite a few unique features it offers, like tracking up to 1000 websites and faster detection of new shares. Plus, it has lots of historic share counts, collected on Nov 2015:
