I was just checking out Wordfence as I had received the failed login report that there had been login attempts on my username. It was then that I noticed that all 3 other users have the same username shown when I look on the edit page for that user. I thought this was impossible and certainly don’t remember doing it. The field is marked “Usernames cannot be changed”.

I assume that I have missed something. On the All Users page, it shows my username as I would expect, and also the username I would expect for the other users. By that I mean that in the username column on the Users page, next to my account icon is the username that I expect to see. Next to their names is also the username I would expect to see for them, which in each case is their first name. However, when I go into their edit page, it shows the same username as mine in the username field. Am I misunderstanding the purpose of this field?

I am no expert, but I have had a WP site for at least 15 years and I have never noticed this. I have 2FA activated for the two admin accounts. The other two have no role allocated, but it is convenient to leave them in place.

Have you ever looked at this in another browser? Since the field for the user name is also a form field, a browser could enter your user name with which you log in to your project when auto-completing forms.

If this is not the case: deactivate all plugins as a test to rule them out as the cause.

Great call! I opened the page in Firefox (I normally use Edge) and, indeed, the proper usernames can be seen on the user edit pages. I assume then that there is nothing really to be done except remember this.
