Unable to create required dropdown

I would like to make it required for clients to select an option from the drop down menu. Right now the dropdown is written like:

[select menu-775 “How did you hear about us?” “Social Media ” “Online Ad” “Google Search ” “Personal Referral” “Professional Referral” “Other”]

Changing it using the select* option has not worked, we are still able to submit the contact forms on our website without selecting an item from that dropdown list:

[select* menu-775 “How did you hear about us?” “Social Media ” “Online Ad” “Google Search ” “Personal Referral” “Professional Referral” “Other”]

Is there any other way to require clients to select an item from the dropdown?
