I tried renaming the plugins folder to plugins.hold using host control panel
Please contact your host. It appears that PHP is not being executed.

I have contacted the host provider – hostgator – and they ran a check on there end and say the problem is in the wordpress site which makes sense since I can no longer log into wordpress

the host has checked again and still has not found any issue with anything on there end, they are going to try and replace the site with a backup from a few weeks ago and see if that makes a difference

the host has just fixed this issue – they stated the wordpress core needed to be restored from a backup they said the core was infected or damaged
