If I upload a file with the same name to buddy drive, the file is not replaced. Is there anyway to fix this ?

No, unfortunately this is not the way that WordPress or BuddyDrive work. You would have to write quite a bit of custom code to achieve this.

We also investigated this and gave up. Too much work for us.

There is a plugin Enable Media Replace which offers this functionality.

I don’t know if it works with BuddyPress in the way you want to use ist, but maybe it would be a start.

Good find chzumbrunnen! In theory, this should work with BuddyPress & BuddyDrive. However, I would test it at length before running it in production.
