So I’m trying to understand (and track down) all links that trigger a 404 error. Here’s what I’m not understanding – I have a link to something that doesn’t exist which should trigger the 404 error process – but wait! There is a 404.php that has been customized for this site so I get this nicely formatted page that uses my theme and politely says:

    Not Found!
Apologies, but the item you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help.

So is a 404 error REALLY occurring – because I’m being directed to a page that DOES exist?

The reason I’m asking is that I have a page with a link that I KNOW is broken and when I click on it, I am sent to the custom page. But when I try to use plugins to find broken links, this link doesn’t show up. The other thing that’s kind of odd is that I also found this tool:
http://www.2bone.com/links/linkchecker.shtml to check for broken links, all links check out fine – but the broken link is not even listed as being on the page.

I need to go through the site and find which links are sending people to this custom page and actually fix the problems.

I’m soooo confused…. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Yes – it’s still a 404 error. See creating a 404 error page.

Thanks so much for your reply, But I have to say I don’t get it – why don’t the broken link checker plugin and the URL I listed above show this as a broken link? Or in the case of the URL above, the link on the page is not being listed as a link at all.

    Thoughts?????

    thanks!
