Unexpected error [add new plugins/themes]

    I’ve installed and uninstalled and reinstalled wordress so many times, and started my server install from scratch almost as often. I have a fresh install (again) and I am (again) encountering errors on the pages for adding new plugins or new themes.

    Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with ww.wp.xz.cn or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to ww.wp.xz.cn. Please contact your server administrator.) in /var/www/html/wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php on line 183

    Generally these errors point to the link to api.ww.wp.xz.cn – similarly, akismet doesn’t want to connect because api connection issues.

    I’ve followed so many guides for solving this problem I’ve lost track.

    Curl is installed/enabled

    I have added the IP and api.ww.wp.xz.cn to the hosts file

    The firewall is set as it should be.

    Anyone come across this infuriating error and found a solution?

    I found what I hope is a ‘fix’ by adding this to my wp_config.

    define('ALTERNATE_WP_CRON' , true );

    It worked, but I’d be interested to know if this is the best solution for the problem going forward?
