I installed the plugin last week. Enjoying it. It happened from the beginning.

Themes
As a test switch to a default theme such as twentytwenty, and see if this fixes.
Plugins
If that doesn’t work, also deactivate all plugins apart from bbpress and see if this fixes. if it does, re-enable one at a time to see which is causing the error.
If you cannot do this to your site (say because it is live) then use the ‘troubleshooting’ features of this plugin to let you test without affecting other users

Health check is good with only one recommendation; PHP upgrade. Might be the problem but I just don’t see how since everything else is working.

it is possible (and equally may not be !!) that it might be a php compare issue, so try upgrading and come back if you still have a problem
is it just the number, or are the unread/read icon wrong as well?

I cannot replicate this for my test site.

Welcome back. Hope you had a restful time away. Still the same issue but it’s ok. Not a big concern. If you ever come across a fix just let me know.
