Hi,
You did the right thing by backing up your site — well done! Here’s why you saw that message from Elementor:
When Elementor shows a notice like:
“The latest update includes some substantial changes across different areas of the plugin. We highly recommend you backup your site before upgrading, and make sure you first update in a staging environment.”
…it means the update is a major release with significant code changes. These can potentially affect:
- How your pages look or behave (since Elementor controls layouts and styling)
- How the plugin interacts with your theme or other plugins (major updates may add or remove features)
- Compatibility with any custom code (if your designer added custom snippets)
This isn’t a bug or an error — it’s a precautionary best practice to avoid accidental downtime on live sites. Some setups use older theme files or third-party add-ons that might not be immediately compatible with major changes, so Elementor recommends testing first in a staging environment.
Why hasn’t your designer seen this before?
This message only appears for larger version updates. Most Elementor updates are minor (bug fixes or small improvements) and don’t show this warning. But for major version changes, Elementor wants to make sure you take extra care.
You did everything correctly by backing up beforehand — and if your site is running smoothly now, there’s nothing more you need to do.
Best regards,
Plugin Support
