Edit the individual page and check the comment setting there.

You mean uncheck the comment setting on the individual page(s), right? That’s exactly what I’ve done. But it doesn’t make a difference. Thanks, though.
In the expanded “screen options” menu, the “comments” box is unchecked,
this has no influence on the comment form – it only controls the showing of the ‘discussion’ field below the editor, where you can then untick ‘allow comments’

That fixed it, alchymyth. Thanks so much!

I’m using WordPress as a multi-page website with a blog. I have it set up so that my blog accepts comments but my pages do not. At least, they’re not supposed to, but some of them do. Not all my pages, just a couple of them, and I don’t know why. In the expanded “screen options” menu, the “comments” box is unchecked, but that makes no difference: at the bottom of the pages in question, a form for making comments appears, regardless. I’ve tried checking the box and updating, then unchecking it and updating again, just to see if that might help, but it doesn’t. Seems like I’m stuck with an unwanted comments form on some pages that are intended as static pages.
Again, only a couple of pages are giving me this problem, and my screen options for them are set no differently from the pages that are behaving themselves. The “comments” box is unchecked on these pages, just as for all the rest.
If you want to see what I’m talking about, go to this page of my blog: http://thecopyfox.com/writing/ and scroll all the way down. Compare that with other pages on my blog and you’ll see that the invitation to “Leave a Reply” is missing on most pages, which is what I want.
I’ll much appreciate some help.
