update-core.php 404 error

I am having an issue on several self hosted sites accessing update-core.php. I am getting a 404 Error. I am also seeing slowness on the sites in general. The site are spread out across several VM’s on 2 different hosts. All sites are running on Nginx 1.12+ and MariaDB 5.5+. Some sites are running PHP 5.6+ and some are running PHP 7.1+. I have some success turning off all plugins but this is not consistently working.

This seems to have appeared suddenly.

Additionally, I have looked into issues with my VM hosts, website attack and website compromise but I am not finding anything.

Note sure where to look next.
