Not sure if you mean that you need PHP7 as opposed to PHP5 but if you do then IMO you are putting your clients at greater risk stopping on PHP5 tbh. The security (and speed!) improvements of upgrading to PHP7 are very worthwhile.
As far as Xcloner itself, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to drop support for PHP5 when PHP7 has been out for 3 years (ish?)
Now if you can’t upgrade due to other issues then I can understand – but that wouldn’t be Xcloner fault.
If it’s not about PHP5 versus PHP7 though then I would be interested to see what’s changed in case it affects my PHP7 sites 🙂
Cheers,
Steve.
Hi Steve,
actually I agree with you regarding the idea that we should stay not behind and go with progress like using up to date versions. My point is not at all about the php versions. I would be even ok with having the plugin stop support old php versions, BUT it is about how the change was introduced.
I did not see the incompatibility with the update coming, I updated and got a message in style ‘oops, we changed compatibility. bad luck you are lost now, I am just disabling myself now, goodbye’. This is what annoys me here.
Best,
René
Hi Rene, i do understand your concern, however with the latest changes, older php version than 5.6 will trigger your backend to fail, so it has become a requirement for the plugin to be active only on php 5.6 versions and up, and deactivate itself for older ones.
As you probably know, php 5.4 and 5.5 are at the end of life http://php.net/supported-versions.php for some time now, so by not upgrading PHP itself, you are putting your server and your clients site at risk. Further more, you do get actually speed improvements from just upgrading PHP, so it would actually make your sites use less resources on the server.
You always have the option to install the previous version of XCloner from the Advanced View page https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/xcloner-backup-and-restore/advanced/ and only upgrade the plugin when you server will be ready.
Right now, XCloner supports PHP version 5.6 and up.
Hi Liuta,
thanks for your kind response and explanations.
As the plugin actually has many good thing in it and I was basically upset about just a detail, I feel my initial review was not very fair, so I edited it.
I’ll try to update the affected servers where possible.
Best,
René
