Update Problems: Could not create directory

    I cannot upgate plugins or my WP version or themes or add new plugins–all error out with “Could not create directory”

    My permissions are set to 777 for the plugins, themes and upload folders.

    I had this issue previously and thought I had resolved it–though I tried so many things that I could have just forgot where I was and not solved it (I get interrupted by 3 toddlers evey few minutes).

    For some reason I am alos unable to get in through FTP: “Failed to retrieve directory listing”
    So that is another reference to a directory issue–could it be related? I’ve just been going through cpanel which I find easier for me.

    I think that I upgraded last time by doing it manually because this was happening–or a similar issue. I was then that it was an old problem with that previous version, but maybe it’s a problem with something else since it seems to be happening again.

    Why cannot the directory not be created?
    What am I missing ins some file or what do I have included in some file that shouldn’t be there?

    There were issues with WPconfig at some time–I think just before this problem began–so could something be going on there?
