updates to wpfp not registering

I’ve updated function wpfp_init() to display different messages/text strings but even after disabling and re-enabling the plugin, my updated messages are not showing.
any help appreciated.

example:

$wpfp_options['removed'] = "Removed from favorites!<br /><a href='/favorite-articles/'>Back to favorites list.</a>";
