Apologies for stupidity of question, but I don’t want to make a mistake. I am being advised that there is an update to my theme (2015): The following themes have new versions available. Check the ones you want to update and then click “Update Themes”.

Please Note: Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.

I don’t understand what it means by ‘any customisations to theme files will be lost’ and that I should consider using child themes for modification. I don’t know what a child theme is so presumably I haven’t used any. Is it safe for me to update or will I lose my files, layout or appearance?

This warning informs you that any changes you have made to the theme files will be lost when you update the theme. If you have not made any changes to the files, you do not need to worry. Settings you have made in the theme, e.g. in the Customizer, will usually be preserved.

Before you make an update it would be advisable that you make a backup of your WordPress installation. This way, if something goes wrong, you can use the backup to reset the project. More about this here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/wordpress-backups/

Thank you so much for your answer – I don’t believe I have made any changes to files (lack of knowledge apart from anything). Fingers crossed….
