updating woes

Ever since 3.0, I haven’t been able to auto-update plugins. I have no problems manually installing them, but I can’t get rid of the annoying yellow box stating “an automatic WP upgrade has failed”…

I cannot find the “.maintenance” file to delete, as I’ve searched and found that this file is the culprit.

Am I looking in the wrong place?
