Hi I’ve used the free version of UpdraftPlus with no problems for two websites for over a year and a half now. Recently I had found it strange that it backed up the test staging site I had set up, even though the settings were were set to “manual” for the staging site.

I since deleted the staging site. When I backed up to live site today I noticed it was behaving strangely and cancelled the backup. The last successful backup was approximately 85 MB. When the backup reached about that size it began adding files up to 40 MB in size. When I the size reached over 250 MB I cancelled the backup.

Any help diagnosing what is wrong?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

It is possible that it includes the UpdraftPlus backup in the backup.
To check, can you please send us a copy of the latest full backup log?
This can be found in the UpdraftPlus Existing Backups tab.
The contents will be too long to post here directly, but you can use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.

    Hello Bryle.
Thank you for the quick response. Here is a link to the May 31st latest successful log file I downloaded.

    Hi Jeff,

It’s not possible for “Updraft to backup the wrong website”, because UpdraftPlus is a plugin running inside a specific WordPress install; it has no access to anything except that WP install that it is installed inside. It could not back up a different website from that one if it wanted to; it has no access to anything else.

If your WP site has got bigger than you expected it to be, the best way to investigate that is to use a plugin like: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/disk-usage-sunburst/ . This can show you where your space usage is.

    Hi David.
I’ve set out the first line of email that prompted this query below. As you know a staging site is an exact copy of the live site, malahatlegion.ca. It resides in the same space as the live site in a separate folder.

I was surprised to see this backup for the staging site as I specifically turned the staging site settings to manual backup so the staging site would not be backed up. I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the backup was initiated by the live site.

Here is the email I received:
    ________________________________________________________

    Backup of: https://staging.malahatlegion.ca
    UpdraftPlus WordPress backup is complete..
Backup contains: Database only (files were not part of this particular schedule)
Latest status: The backup apparently succeeded and is now complete.

    Hi,

Can you try to re-save the backup settings on your stating site?
Also, does it show any schedule backup in the “Backup/Restore” tab?
The backup could also be a “backup before update”? If that is enabled?

    Thanks,
    Bryle

    Hi Bryce.
I found my website was much bigger than I realized. I did try the sunburst plugin David Anderson suggested but found there was a simpler one, “My Simple Space” that just gave me the directory sizes. It showed my wp-content folder is almost 900 MB. So I can see why the backup is larger than I thought.
