Upgrade from 3.0.4

    I just got a new client who hasn’t updated WordPress since version 3.0.4. The site uses a custom theme (a renamed version of Twenty Ten), so i don’t think there were be any problem theme-wise. But, I’m nervous. Anything I need to know? Obviously I need to back up the files & database, but anything else? Is 1-click upgrade OK?

    Nooo. As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

    One of the plugins that is activated is Custom Post Types (obviously an old version). I’m worried about de-activating that plugin to update WordPress. Do I really have to deactivate that to update WordPress? Won’t that mess things up? Again, I didn’t create this site, it’s a brand new client, and I really don’t want to mess up the site, but it does need to be updated.

    Actually it’s Custom Post Types UI. And there is another plugin being used, More Fields, that hasn’t been updated in over two years. What do I do?

    I would strongly recommend it, yes. Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.
