Upgrade headaches…

    I upgraded WordPress to the most up to date version and I got the White Screen of Death. I then removed all the plugins (via FTP)and got the site to work again.

    I then tried to automatically upgrade WordPress again and now I get an error message that says:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_wp_error() in /home/theof/smacksmog.com/wp-includes/load.php on line 339d

    My whole site is down. Including the Admin section of WordPress.

    The site address is http://www.smacksmog.com

    Any help, is really appreciated.

    Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – re-uploading all files & folder – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WP.

    – re-running the upgrade manually using /wp-admin/upgrade.php.

    if I rename the wp-content/themes to something generic like wp-content/old_themes will WordPress automatically switch to the default? Do I have to leave the default theme in a folder called wp-content/themes?

    Thanks for your help! Its nice not to feel alone in this.

    Rename your current theme’s folder within wp-content/themes. Eg change wp-content/themes/foo to wp-content/themes/bar

    If you carry this out correctly, the default theme will be activated automatically.

    Okay I changed the name of the themes folder I’m using and I still get the same error message.

    Do you have any suggestions as to a good place to read about how to install a fresh download of WP? I use dreamhost as a host and I just used their one click install to setup WordPress from inside their panel. I don’t know how to reload the files and folders via FTP. It sounds like you are suggesting that I reinstall Word Press except for the wp-content folder… I’m not sure how to do this without wiping out the entire site.

    Again, I thank you for your time and help. Any suggestions are very much welcome.

    Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory via FTP or SFTP with fresh copies from the download.
