Upgrading to 3.0.1

I have upgraded WordPress successfully in the past, but now when I try the automatic upload it fails right away with a: “Download failed.: couldn’t connect to host”. It doesn’t even take me to the screen asking for my FTP credentials.
Could someone point me to instructions on how to upgrade manually? “4.Point your browser to /wp-admin/upgrade.php” and follow the instructions isn’t complete enough for me.
