In Most cases that problem occurs due to other plugin conflicting OR any theme JS conflict.
So try to deactivate other once for testing purpose.
Also let us which theme you are using with plugin.

Hi weblizar, The problem was that I had my xamp environment running in parallel: when swiched off Apache and SQL the upload worked as it should!

Hi Weblizar,
I’m using a theme called Other by Thomas Rhodes. Whenever I put the short code for a gallery into the theme, it shows up when I view the change but if I visit my site in a different browser, the gallery doesn’t show up. Any thoughts?
