URL modifications not working

    URL modifications setting on my website for the second language (en) is: ”The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks.”
    However, I need to set a subdomain and change the setting to “The language is set from the subdomain name in pretty permalinks.”

    I created the subdomain “en” and changed the setting to the subdomain option. I got an error message, yet my English site became inaccessible – error 403. My host people looked at the subdomain and said it was set fine, yet as long as it is there, Polylang will look there first. So I had to change the name to “en1,” and my English site is O.K.

    I cannot figure out why the URL setting cannot be changed to a subdomain?
    I saw that in the past, this topic came up frequently, yet I cannot find an answer there.
