[url].php 301 redirect not working

I’m trying to redirect some old url’s to my new website permalink structure. In the old situation all url’s ends with .php. When I try to redirect, for example, http://[website-url].com/contact.php to http://[website-url].com/contact the page shows a 404-error: “The requested URL /test.php was not found on this server.”

Is it possible to redirect urls ending with .php? Thanks already for the help!
