USD/CAD Doubled Conversion Charge

Customers coming to my store from Canada are seeing price totals that are much higher than they should be. The current USD/CAD conversion rate is about 1USD/1.416CAD. A customer sent me a screen shot of their cart, and 10 items priced at $28.80CAD ($20USD) each shows a total of $410CAD, which is almost exactly 1.416 x $288CAD (what the total should be).

I have been having this problem for over a year, and finally had a potential customer willing to spend the time to help me diagnose it, since it’s very difficult to recreate such scenarios by yourself, and my last exchange on this topic yielded… less than satisfactory results.

I think we can all agree that 10 x 28.80 is not 410.00.

To help you resolve this, I need more details about your setup and how conversions are being handled. Could you share your site’s System Status Report?
You can find it under WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support” to share it with me.

Hi there!

I have tried to replicate the issue on my site, and I can see that the issue is only occurring for products with quantity-based price discounts. For all other products, the order price total is working fine.

It seems like the plugin you are using for quantity-based price discounts is causing the issue. For testing, could you please deactivate the plugin that adds the quantity-based pricing and see if that resolves the issue?

If you prefer not to test on the live site, I would suggest creating a staging site and then deactivating the plugin that adds the quantity-based price to see if that resolves the issue.

Unfortunately, the only way I’ve found to get valid test results is to ask for help from customers in the affected countries (that I know about only because of their feedback). It’s maddening.

Do you have a recommendation for spoofing my IP address (I’m in the US) to successfully fool the browser (and plugins) into thinking that I’m in Canada, Australia, etc.?

I disabled that plugin and began using Dynamic Pricing With Discount Rules for WooCommerce instead. It does exactly what I needed.

Thankfully, my client in Canada was willing to test this out for me. Chrome spoofs the location intermittently, as different plugins use different methods for determining the current country/currency conversion to use.

Also, it seems remarkable to me that when implementing rules for quantity based discounts, EVERY vendor seems to use “Fixed Discount” to mean “a fixed discount as a number,” and does not convert that value accordingly when the site is viewed from a different country. A $2USD discount is very different from a $2AUD or $2CAD discount.

To effectively test how your store handles currency conversion for customers in different countries, you can use a VPN. Services like NordVPN or ExpressVPN are reliable options.

Additionally, Chrome offers a way to override geolocation settings for testing location-specific features. To do this:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows) or Cmd+Option+I (Mac) to open Developer Tools.
- Navigate to the Sensors tab (you may need to enable it from the three-dot menu).
- Set the desired location coordinates to simulate different regions.
Regarding the issue you’re encountering, where fixed discounts don’t convert appropriately across currencies, this often occurs because many dynamic pricing plugins apply fixed discounts without accounting for currency conversion rates. This leads to inconsistencies for international customers.

I recommend trying a plugin that supports currency-aware discounts, such as the Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension.
