[ Moderator note: moved to Fixing WordPress. ]

I’ve installed and set up XAMPP (v. 5.6.30-1) and WordPress (v. 4.8) for some tests and I want to write posts in markdown.

I found this official support document from wordpress.COM, stating that markdown support can simply be enabled in the settings, but this option is not available for me (see screenshot below).

    No markdown option

Then I tried to install the [JP Markdown plugin](https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/jetpack-markdown/), which kind of works, but only partially.

    Some markdown usage

Most of the markdown works, but for example headings do not work.

Why don’t I have the options as officially stated by wordpress.com, to enable markdown?

And how do I enable a proper markdown editor for wordpress posts?

WordPress.com is entirely different software than what’s on ww.wp.xz.cn. It is expected that features available on WordPress.COM won’t all be available on ww.wp.xz.cn unless through a plugin. Plugins here are largely developed by the WordPress community and not Automattic, therefore will differ from core functionality at .COM.

Thank you for the feedback – I understand that wordpress COM and ORG are different – I just assumed such a basic feature would be, well, basic. Sorry for that.

Is there a way to enable the usage of markdown in a wordpress(.org) installation?

Oddly it looks like the plugin you were using isn’t actually developed by Jetpack, but someone pretending to be Jetpack.

The markdown functionality has now been incorporated into Jetpack: https://jetpack.com/support/markdown/

So try that plugin isntead: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/jetpack/

Thank you for the suggestion, but that seems like some insane overkill, just to enable markdown.

The reason it isn’t in WordPress core is down to the ww.wp.xz.cn philosophy of designing for the majority and the majority of people using WordPress are not developers.
