using column shortcode formats text differently

I am using the Elegant theme Aggregate and wish to build an address directory. Its default is Full Width Page, so I’ve introduced columnar shortcode using [one_half] and [/one_half] to divide the adress sections into two columns.

If I had no columns (that is, one at full page width), the addresses would show normally:
Company Name
Street Address
City ST/PV POSTALCODE

Using the shortcode, the second column’s addresses appear as intended but the first column changes the address to one line each:
Company Name Street Address City ST/PV POSTALCODE

(at least spaces are introduce where a return should be)

What causes this? What is a corrective solution?
