Yes it is possible. Did you try it?
When I tried to create a new language, the Loco Edit told me that the files already existed. Then I renamed the existing files, let Loco Edit create its own files and then deleted what Loco Edit created and restored the already translated files.
However, when I refreshed the Loco edit screen the language had disappeared.
I must be doing something wrong. By the way, thank you so so much for this amazing plugin. It makes life so much easier!

1) what theme are you translating?
2) what are the file paths you’ve created?

I don’t see anything wrong with what you’re doing here.
As you’ve been swapping files about then it’s possible the cache has got messed up. Try enabling WP_DEBUG mode and see if that fixes it.
