How does one call the featured image for a text block? I added one and it doesn’t display automatically, but I don’t see a way to call it specifically. In the case of this specific block, I’m using it as a widget in a sidebar.

Yes, It’s just there because some people asked for it to be available. It does not pull in automatically.

I would recommend using this: where post_id would be the ID of your text block:

I just added in version 1.4.6 the ability to make custom templates. It looks for a template file like text-blocks-123.php where 123 is the ID of the text block you are loading. In that file you can then use the post thumbnail and lots of other stuff.
