Using new_link for database connections

Can someone point me towards documentation on how to use this? I want to connect to a different database from one of my pages, but it keep reverting to the WP database. Someone said to use the new_link function, for lack of a better word, but i cannot find a useful example. Can someone point me to some example code that actually works for connecting to an external database from WP?
