I may not always understand what I’m doing, but I’m great at following good directions. As a result, even though I still consider myself a newbie, I’ve used Duplicator numerous times to create subdomains for my site, which I use for testing and as a backup for my site. This is the first time I’ve created two at once, which I’d like to be perfect clones of the original.

I don’t have any point of reference for knowing if this question makes sense, as written, so please bear with me:

Can I use the same Duplicator package and installer files, as well as the same new, empty database to create both of those sites? I’m mostly unsure about the database. Do I need a separate new one for each cloned subdomain, or will the installation just fill it in for that site, as I use it. (See? Does that even make sense? lol)

I usually have to manually extract the zipped archive to work around a server timeout issue, so currently I have uploaded copies of the same Dup. files to the newly created subdomains, but haven’t deployed them yet. I want to be sure doing so won’t mess anything up before I do it. I know extracting one of them will be fine; I just don’t understand the dynamics of the MySQL database associated with the Dup. files re a second one.

Cory, let me also say that it’s extremely impressive how you manage and maintain your excellent product. I am constantly mentioning and recommending Duplicator, whenever the opportunity presents itself. Thank you!

  • Hey Dglauren,

    Databases?
Yes you will need a separate database for each cloned site…

    Files?
Yes, you can use the same installer.php and archive.zip multiple times. All the magic happens in the installer and the database you connect to.

    Hope that clears things up…

    Cheers~
