Vacation Mode

Is there a good way to make it so visitors are unable to purchase anything? I think last year I checked the box to hide the “add to cart” button, but for some reason it took about three days before it hid the button on all the pages (I do not have any caching installed or active). I don’t wish to come home to a bunch of angry customers wondering why their orders haven’t shipped. 🙂
