Temporarily deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce. Do you still have this problem?
Hi @lienfloriginal
I experience an issue when creating attributes in a new ( or existing) variable product. I used to be able to create a variable product with certain attributes (that I use to generate variations of the product) before. Don’t understand what goes wrong now and would appreciate some help.
It goes wrong in step 4 – Where I’m unable to select / change the ” use in variations” checkbox. It doesn’t let me modify the checkbox, moreover it automatically unchecks when i save the attribute I just added
From what I understand, you’re having trouble with the ‘Use in Variations’ checkbox when creating product attributes in a variable product on WooCommerce.
This is a known issue that we believe has been fixed in the latest version of WooCommerce Subscriptions, which is 5.3.1. To resolve the issue, please try updating your WooCommerce Subscriptions to version 5.3.1.
Here’s how you can do it:
- Go to your WordPress dashboard.
- Click on ‘
Plugins‘.
- Find ‘WooCommerce Subscriptions‘ in your plugin list.
- Click on the ‘Update Now‘ button next to it.
This process should ideally resolve the issue. However, if the problem persists, could you send us a copy of your site’s System Status? This will give us a clearer picture of your site’s setup and help us pinpoint the problem. You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select Get system report and then Copy for support.
Additionally, could you also provide us with the fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.
Once you’ve got that, you can paste them right here in your reply, or use https://pastebin.com/ to paste it there and share it with us.
I appreciate your patience and cooperation in this. I’m eagerly awaiting your response so we can get this sorted out for you.
Hi @bisratlearn ;
I don’t have Woocommerce subscriptions as a plugin.
I only have the woocommerce plugin.
Here the system status of woocommerce:
[ SNIP! ]
In terms of the fatal error log – I don’t have any.
Thanks for your support.

@lienfloriginal That output became a nightmare for this site and broke your reply. I sniped out the log.
If you need share that data please use https://gist.github.com/ or https://pastebin.com/ or the like instead and post the link to that paste.
variable check – Pastebin.com – system status of woocommerce can be found here.
@lorro – I deactivated all plugins except woocommerce but the problem is still there. Can’t check the “use in variations” checkbox
I had a look at your system status report. The only thing that stood out is that your theme is quite old. It dates from late 2020 and it is compatible with WooCommerce 4.7.1 according to the theme changelog. WooCommerce is now at version 7.9.0.
So, please temporarily deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce again, and this time, also switch to the Storefront theme, and check.
This work will test whether your theme is causing the problem.
Hi @lienfloriginal
I don’t have Woocommerce subscriptions as a plugin. I only have the woocommerce plugin.
I deactivated all plugins except woocommerce but the problem is still there. Can’t check the “use in variations” checkbox
It seems like you’ve already put in a good deal of effort to troubleshoot the issue you’re experiencing with the “use in variations” checkbox in WooCommerce. From what you’ve shared, it appears this problem might stem from a known bug in earlier versions of WooCommerce. This bug was causing the “Used for variations” checkbox to be disabled on Variable products.
The great news is, WooCommerce version 8.0.0 has addressed and fixed this bug! So, I’d suggest updating your WooCommerce plugin to the latest version to rectify this issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do that:
- Go to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Navigate to ‘Plugins‘.
- Locate ‘WooCommerce‘ in your list of installed plugins.
- Click on ‘Update Now‘ next to ‘WooCommerce‘.
Once updated, give it another shot and see if you can now tick the ‘Use in Variations’ checkbox. If the problem continues, don’t hesitate to reach out so we can assist you further in troubleshooting.
📌 A quick reminder: Before you make any changes, we strongly recommend that you create a backup of your full site and database. This is a crucial step to ensure that in case anything goes wrong, you can easily restore your site to its previous, functioning state.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. I’m eagerly awaiting your response so we can get this sorted out for you.
Updated the Woocommerce plugin to 8.0.1.
Problem resolved!
Thanks for the support – greatly appreciated
Hi @lienfloriginal ,
Glad to hear that updating WooCommerce core to its latest version did the trick!
I’ll go ahead and mark this as resolved then, however feel free to create a new topic should you need any further help.
Also, if you have a few minutes, we’d love it if you could leave us a review:
