Variable Products Cart Issue

I have a site where some of the products are variable products (specifically they are musical instruments where sizes can be chosen). When viewing the products you can select the size just fine and you can also add them to the cart just fine. However, when you view the cart the options for those products are not shown. When you place the order there are no options shown for the product, either. It’s not as though it shows the options as being blank, it doesn’t even show that the item has options. I have so far been unable to track down the cause. There are no javascript errors in the console or anything. Any suggestions on what could be causing this? (standard products process just fine)
