Web Designer Depot Theme

I am wanting to create (or download) a wordpress theme that is similar to the webdesignerdepot.com.

I am new at this, but I have been watching many tutorials, reading lots of forums, and experimenting, but I am still so unfamiliar with what the different styles are called, that it makes it difficult to search for exactly what I am wanting.

What I like about the Web Designer Depot website is this:
1) I love the double header at the top. The top header is nice and simple, with a simple button and a short tagline, and also collapsible. The second header is the principal header, with the menu and site navigation; it is permanent. The header has the logo in the middle, slightly taller than the header, giving a really nice effect. And there is a very narrow window above the header with a vibrant mosaic-type image.
2) I like the way it shows the most recent blog posts. Each post is a two box row, picture on the left, text on the right, and then the next row flip flops, and continues alternating this way all the way down.
3) The sidebar is off to the right for website monetization, post history, etc.

Now, my blog is a personal blog, and it doesn’t get much traffic, just for journaling, so I would love to experiment with it and try to figure out how to combine the parts I love most about different websites on my blog. Obviously, Web Designer Depot has a ton of content and lots of different categories, something that I do not have either.

When it comes to my homepage, I only want the first 2 or 3 most recent blog posts to show up in the alternating box style. Below that I want to put three box widgets that link to other pages on my website, contact, about, blog, etc. I haven’t completely decided the content I want there, but I also like the layout that way. Simple, clean, not too much information assaulting you at the opening of the homepage, but just enough to be inviting and interesting.

Can anyone point me in the general direction of tutorials I can use or where I should look to figure out how to do something like this? I have read that Montezuma and Responsive are good themes to start with and customize. I have also followed along Tyler Moore’s youtube tutorials that take you step-by-step through several different ways of building a website, but the majority of his videos are over 2 years old, and I know 2 years is a long time when it comes to coding and versions and updates of programs, themes, and available options.

I could also download a template if there is one (free or paid) that already has a layout similar to what I am wanting, but since I am playing around with the website, I would really love customizing it myself, even if I make a million mistakes and it takes me 4 times as long. =) It is something fun that I enjoy playing around with, so I would prefer doing it myself than going with something ready-made.
