The /resized/ folder is created when you use the Slider settings > Optimize slide images option:

We’re storing the resized images there.
Currently the only way to use webp images in the slider is to select the original webp images instead of the jpg/png files e.g. as the background of the slide. Please note that we don’t have a fallback option, so those browsers/devices that don’t support the webp format won’t display the images.
We’re working on a new version, which will be able to generate webp images and display it for the browsers which support it, but that version is still under development, and it will take some time to be ready for release.
Edit: We don’t really support 3rd party plugins replacing or modifying our images, because they tend to cause problems.

The note with the other plugin was just a note for you that you know how I generate the webp version. This means SS3 does not need to gennerate it, just use it.
The solution you described is not realy usable because (like you mentioned) there is no fallback for browser which do not support webp.
Looks like I need to wait for your update. Think this is a very important update (together with Web Vitals) to support speed. My front page is very very quick with close to 100% Lighhouse score… if I disable SS3. For a slider SS3 is quick, but the slider is still a big performance issue with much room for improvement.
Hope you come up quickly with the update with the fallback solution (again, webp generation isn’t needed, there are enough plugins out which are doing it very well)

Yes, the webp support mentioned in this changelog is what I said in the previous reply. You can select webp images and use them as in the slider, instead of jpg/png images. The image validator will no longer recognize them as invalid images, like it did before.
Again, you can use webp images, by selecting them at the image options. But we don’t have fallback option for them.
