These types of problems can be difficult and frustrating to diagnose.
Do you have access to your server’s logs? (If not, ask your host for help.) I suggest asking some of the people who say they can’t access it to give you their IP addresses – they can go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to grab it – and tell you at what time they had an access problem. Then, look in your logs and find the matching entry, and see if you can find an error message or pattern.
I have been told today by a couple of people that they cannot access my website:
When they say the “cannot access” it – ask them exactly what they mean. Does it not load at all? Does it give any sort of error message, and if so can they send you a screenshot?
You could also ask these folks to tell you what ISP and browser/version they are using, to add to your arsenal of info.
I’m having problems reaching your site right now from the UK (using Win7/ Firefox 12). There are a couple of things you could do to try & narrow the issue down:
– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
– switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
Interesting, now I’m having problems too (just tries to load endlessly – Firefox 12) – whereas a few minutes ago it loaded up immediately.
Intermittent plugin issue? Or an overloaded server? The latter seems the most likely, unfortunately.
Esmi – I suspect you may be correct about the overloaded server. I ran the domain through a tool that tells what other sites are on the same server and it shows over 1000 other sites sharing the same IP.

Ouch! No wonder the server is struggling! On the plus side, that’s another nice tool you’ve pointed out. š
@brightondogpics: Are you paying for hosting?
Thanks very much for your help.
Yes I am paying for hosting with 123 reg. I think I will go to them and ask about this, but is there a way I can tell how often my website is having problems, because I have noticed it being hard for myself to get on to my site on loads of occasions. I thought it was my internet connection!
I think I will go to them and ask about this
Ask them to move your account to another server with less than 400 sites on it. It’s not your ‘net connection as we’ve proven here.
Thank you very much. I have submitted my request. I’ll let you know what they say.
Thanks a million, I would not have had the first clue to try and figure this problem out.
š
great news, they have agreed to move my site to a new server straight away š
One thing, they’re asking me to make a backup… erm, how do you do this??
I have installed Backupwordpress plugin on to my site as I am trying to perform a backup before 123 reg move my site to a different server. I ask the plugin to perform a backup and it seems to get stuck, but when i cancel it a list of zip backup files appear which state I can download them.
So I try to download them and I get this message: You don’t have permission to access /wp-content/backups/brighton-dog-photography.backup.2012-05-09-11-11-12.zip on this server.
Anyone know anything about this?
Argh.. please help!!
I ave now downloaded another plugin called WP Easy Backup. One click and it saves a backup to the uploads folder of my site. I go and get the zip file, download it and it says I can’t open it. What the hell is going on with all these plugins not doing what they say they’re supposed to?!! It’s driving me mad….
I’ve tried to backup using Filezilla as they also suggest but it DOES NOT WORK!
This is perhaps a permission issue with server. Common on shared servers.
1)Ask your provider to set up these permissions.
2)Can you download the complete WP file to your pc
3)Check you are using the correct name and password in ftp
4)What error are you receiving from filezilla if it’s 530 then you are using the wrong name and /or password
