Website Overhaul

    HI! So I’d like to redo my website and know what I’d like but not sure where to start in terms of all the technical specifics. Right now I have WordPress installed to my domain name and the ‘home’ page is the blog.

    What I’d like to have is a static page for my home (with some pictures and texts) and then navigation links to my blog/store/writing credits/etc). Sort of the layout like this: http://www.believeiam.com/

    I’m hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as setting this up properly. Do I need to use something else in addition to a WordPress theme??

    To avoid making your own theme (technical and time consuming), try out the themes available for free
    http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/themes/
    http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/themes/tag-filter/

    You can also try searching Google for themes not found on ww.wp.xz.cn.

    If the theme doesn’t come with a plugin like, ‘Custom CSS’ and you want to make appearance changes, you may need to install that type of plugin. Then you can add your own CSS styles to the area allocated of the plugin.

    Actually the simplest way to accomplish what you’re seeking is to set your front page to a static page in your preferences. It doesn’t require a special template or theme. Just create the page you want as your front page, then go to “Settings” -> “Reading” and change “Front page displays” to “a static page”. Then point the “landing page” to the page you created as your front page and the “Posts page” to a blank page. Save your settings, refresh your site (if you already have it open) and let the magic of WordPress do the rest.
