    Hi,

I am working on a group project. We have a website created with WordPress, and we want to connect it to a database. Does WordPress only work with MySQL, or can we use something else, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Access? Thank you for your help.

Does WordPress only work with MySQL

    Yes.

or can we use something else, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Access?

    No. 😉

WordPress has a requirement of MySQL version 5.0 or greater (MySQL 5.5 or greater is recommended.

Using other databases is not supported. On a Windows platform there are ways to install MySQL (and WordPress).

For your group project are you looking to host on a Windows server?

    Good afternoon Jan,

Thank you for the quick response. Both Alex and I along with two others are working on a project with the database, and there are two other teams.

One team is the networking team and they bought a Server for this organization. The other team is the web development team, which they have decided to go with WordPress which is why we are looking into see if we can connect the database to their organization website, and how the implementation will look.

Right now they use Microsoft Access as their database and if we did link to the website, we would put the database on a Windows server.

Thanks and any help would be great!

Microsoft Access won’t work I’m afraid. There are versions of MySQL that will install on a Windows server.

    Give this page a look.

    http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/installer/

I’ve referring to that page because it’s on the mysql.com page but there are others too. For now I recommend you go with that one.

If I am off-base (I’m a Linux server person myself) I’m sure someone will chime into this topic. 😉

Thanks, I understand Access will not work. You have been very helpful, do you know any websites that do connect their database directly to the website I can scout?

    Thanks
