What does this setting do: “Send non-secure (non https) request for homepage”

I tried googling it but couldn’t find anything. Can someone explain what this setting does? From the main settings page?

“Send non-secure (non https) request for homepage”

It’s a check box option.

I currently have it checked off but don’t understand what it does.
