    Hi,

I created two websites using two different domain names(both domain names purchased from host gator). For my first website, I tried changing my domain prefix from http//: to https//:, so I didn’t have to see all of this weird verbiage in my URL, and so I could only see my website name in the URL. After I did that, I could not access WordPress as an admin as I would be taken to a page saying something in regards to unsecure access. I tried troubleshooting this issue for literally hours before I decided to just buy another domain off of host gator and try to set up another website.

I purchased another domain name from host gator and when I went to the Host Gator dashboard > Hosting > C-panel and tried to install the WordPress Installer, it took me right to the ‘Softaculous’ WordPress page. I installed the WordPress Installer. However, when I go to the WordPress admin page in regards to the second domain, it was not like it was with the first domain. For one, Permalinks is not under the Settings tab.

I tried transferring my domain from gator host over to WordPress, but WordPress wants around $100 to do so, and I don’t want to pay that. I contacted someone from WordPress and she said my 2nd domain is using a self-hosted version of WordPress, not WordPress.com.

I am just really confused on what is going on. When working with my 1st domain, I don’t remember having to create a website(like I did for my second domain) in order to get to the admin page of WordPress. In addition, I don’t understand why Permalinks is not showing up in the admin page of WordPress in regards to my second domain. Any help is appreciated and if you need any clarification, feel free to ask. Thank you for any help and have a great day.

    Best,
    Chris

  • Yeah, there’s a lot going on here… including a lot of incorrect assumptions.

Before we can provide any help, kindly tell us the actual domain(s) of the site(s) you need help with.

You previously mentioned https://chrisbscience.wordpress.com, but this is a WordPress.com website (not the “self-hosted version of WordPress” you were told), and it also uses a sub-domain, not the actual domains that you purchased.

I’m providing some additional comments below to try to explain what’s going on. But feel free to skip these and just provide the info I asked for.

For my first website, I tried changing my domain prefix from http//: to https//:, so I didn’t have to see all of this weird verbiage in my URL, and so I could only see my website name in the URL. Before you can use HTTPS, you need to acquire an SSL certificate for your domain, and properly configure your site to use the certificate. It seems this step was skipped, that’s why you encountered issues after changing the address from HTTP to HTTPS.

I purchased another domain name from host gator and when I went to the Host Gator dashboard > Hosting > C-panel and tried to install the WordPress Installer, it took me right to the ‘Softaculous’ WordPress page. Can you give the address of THIS very website you installed with Softaculous in cPanel?

I’m asking because the address you gave in your message above is a WordPress.com site, not a self-hosted WordPress site, and can never be the one you installed with cPanel’s Softaculous.

I tried transferring my domain from gator host over to WordPress, but WordPress wants around $100 to do so, and I don’t want to pay that. I contacted someone from WordPress and she said my 2nd domain is using a self-hosted version of WordPress, not WordPress.com.

You probably mean you tried transferring your domain to “WordPress.com”, which is different from WordPress (just the software) and ww.wp.xz.cn (developers of the WordPress software, where you are now). Yeah, I know it can be confusing. Here’s a handy guide explaining the differences. https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/wordpress-vs-wordpress-com/

WordPress.com is an independent 3rd-party hosting service, and just as Hostgator charged you to host your website, WordPress.com would also charge you to host your WordPress site for you if you want to transfer your site to their service.

In addition, I don’t understand why Permalinks is not showing up in the admin page of WordPress in regards to my second domain. Any help is appreciated and if you need any clarification, feel free to ask. Thank you for any help and have a great day.

My hunch is that you’re logged into the WordPress.com website you mentioned in your post (https://chrisbscience.wordpress.com), which, while based on the WordPress software, doesn’t have the same features as a self-hosted WordPress site.

That’s why I’m asking for your domains in question to confirm.

I got it all take care of. I needed to have the company I purchased my domain from do some back end work. Thank you very much for your input!
