• I want to install a blog attached to an existing website.
I use cPanel 11 and Mac OS X.

    A few questions:

I can choose to install WP in the root or in a subdirectory. What are the pros and cons in this situation? Which option makes is easiest to find the blog for the readers and for the search engines?

What will be the address if I install it in the root?

Some websites offer a brief tutorial about installing WP. They don’t mention the necessity to open a database in MySQL. Is that because it is not necessary in cPanel 11 or because the tutorials are incomplete?

Is the email address the one used for admin questions between WP and me or is it the address that will eventually be used by readers for posting comments?

    Thanks
    Palmero

  • I’d recommend installing it in the /blog folder and i think some Google guru recommended that–to me it makes it easy to keep all WordPress in one sub-folder. Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory describes this.

Read Installing WordPress to learn you would browse to yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php to install WordPress.

You will need to create the MySQL database, a user, and assign that user full rights to the database.

Admin address is where email is sent when new users register for the blog. Comments get emailed to the author of the post receiving the comments.

Might look at several of the articles at Category:Getting_Started.

I have now installed a blog. Actually it installed itself in the file manager of the cPanel, but not on my own computer. What to do now to manage it? Can I download it to my WYSIWYG? Or can I get access to the source code any other way?
And how do I get rid of the “Meta” widget – I don’t think the readers should have access to the links under Meta. (log-in for example).
During the installation process WP created a data base by it self. Do I need to do anything in regard to the database, or is it just functioning by itself?
    The blog is here: http://holidayislandlapalma.co.uk/blog/

I haven’t found what I need in the “Getting_Started”, but it is a huge text, so I might have missed it.

You don’t download it to your computer, you access you blog on your host at http://holidayislandlapalma.co.uk/blog/wp-login.php and use Write->Post to start writing posts.

If you don’t want the Meta information, then visit Design->Widgets and add the widgets on your sidebar that you want.

I guess then I should just point you to Administering_Your_Blog. There is the WordPress for Dummies book.

As for your database you will want to learn to Backup your database.
